Part of Everything We Do: Integrating literacy into the Canadian labour movement

By Tamara Levine, published in the journal Literacies

The author writes about how unions are moving away from a project-based, grant-dependent approach in which literacy is appended to the regular work of the union to one that emphasizes how literacy and clear language can be part of everything the union does. In exploring this shift, the author discusses the history of literacy as a union issue; the structure and funding of union-based literacy programs; the integration of literacy into union structures, policies and priorities; the role of the Canadian Labour of Congress in literacy; as well as challenges and resistance to the literacy integration concept.
